Creation Station

Yesterday I was brilliant. I pulled out my crap-ass computer of suckiness, and set it up next to my new computer of greatness.

Why, you ask? (Even if you don’t ask, I’m gonna tell, so be nice and ask! Ask!)

Because…

  • I have step-by-step formatting guidelines that I’ve made for print books and covers. Since I got a nifty phone, I’ve used my phone as my second screen. Not ideal for many reasons. Pulling up my instructions on my old computer, I can format the shit out of books with ease. No more switching back and forth between programs!
  • A friend of mine recently suggested typing out, verbatim, the text of a novel I enjoy. All the way through. Train the fingers to write. This sort of thing. He also suggested typing out a story of mine. I’ve been stuck (as in, seriously, I’m sitting in a vat of glue in the fucking Elmer’s factory and cannot move) with a couple of books. Today, I started typing out what I’ve got so far for the sequel to Under His Roof. It actually isn’t bad! To be honest, it’s pretty hot. Past-me did good. I’m revising as I go, and it’s working. Admittedly, I don’t need the second screen because Scrivener is incredible, but I like it.
  • Having two computers is cool.

So, now you know what the desk of this writer is like. Other writers/stay-at-home workers/self-employed folks– what do your desks look like?

Reminder: Social Service is free today through Thursday. An anthology I’m in called Cream of the Crop: Disciplined Sex is free today as well.

  1. I’m jealous of you. Two computers (or at least two monitors with an extended desktop) is so handy. I need to invest in another one soon. I have the desktop (I know, shocking that people still use those), my Kindle Fire and my Iphone. That’s so much distraction, it’s a miracle I ever get anything done. Two computers would be much better…

    Come on UHR2!!!

  2. That is definitely a good idea, to have two computers in use!

And I totally agree with you on Scrivener… it is GREAT to use!
